Spammers Kill the Internet

O.K. maybe that's a bit of an overstatement, but they did kill the comments feature on the Roland Schorr & Tower blogs. Sorry, but deleting/blacklisting spam comments was sucking up too much of my time. For every legitimate comment we got here I'd get HUNDREDS of spam comments. I have a blacklist of words/phrases/domains that is quite literally thousands of entries long and it wasn't seeming to make a dent in the flood.

Who Does It?

99% of it is from cut-rate SEO companies who somebody paid to try and get them a better ranking on Google. Since these jerks have no real skills what they do is hire a bunch of cheap foreign labor to go on every blog they can find and post crap, complete with the URL of the site they've been hired to pimp, in hopes that it will help get them better Google rankings. It doesn't work, the comments are moderated so the spam never sees the light of day, Google is too smart for that, and it just wastes everybody's time and gets potentially useful features (like comments) turned off.

So...for now you can't comment on any of our posts here, sorry. If you have a comment feel free to post it on Twitter. I'm @bschorr. And if you meet somebody who says they do cheap SEO...you can thank them for killing our comments.

Original post blogged on b2evolution.

Six years ago today three partners formed a new consulting firm in Honolulu, Hawaii that rose from the ashes of a Swedish-based firm that two of the partners had worked for. Since then we've helped a lot of companies and grown from one office to three. We've travelled all over the world and met a lot of nice folks.

We'd like to take this opportunity to thank our clients, staff, vendors, partners and supporters for six great years.

The Certainty of Uncertainty

When I was in business school 20 years ago a central theme was evaluating uncertainty; making decisions in an uncertain environment, often with imperfect information; leading your company forward thru complex and ever-changing scenarios. Today businesses use "uncertainty" as an excuse for not doing what they don't want to do: hire and invest domestically.

Uncertainty is and always has been a reality in business. You can't be certain what fuel prices are going to be 2 months from now. You can't be certain who's going to win the next election. You can't predict that a tsunami is going to shut down major parts of your supply chain. You can't predict that you'll lose key personnel due to death or change of employment.

If you're waiting for certainty in order to invest in your people and your company then there's no point going to the office every day - you'll never have it.

Original post blogged on b2evolution.
